2001 Lyman-Morse 63' _{(19.20 m)} Fontaine Custom 63 Pilothouse Sloop

DESCRIPTION

MYSTERY is a custom Ted Fontaine–designed pilothouse performance cruiser built by Lyman-Morse in Thomaston, Maine. Conceived for fast, comfortable offshore cruising with a small crew, she features a shoal-draft keel/centerboard configuration with a protected center cockpit, extensive powered sail handling and a true inside steering station.

Her centerboard arrangement provides a draft range from 6' 6" with the board raised to 14' 2" when lowered, combining access to shoal cruising grounds with enhanced performance upwind. Her carbon rig, hydraulic furling systems and cockpit-centered sail controls are configured for efficient shorthanded operation.

Below, the Herreshoff-inspired interior combines painted panels and overheads with extensive varnished mahogany and teak joinery. Three private cabins and three heads provide eight individual berths to comfortably accommodate three couples. A generous main salon, protected passageway galley, unique pilothouse upper salon and unusually accessible machinery space complete the arrangement.

As described in great detail below, MYSTERY has just completed an extensive Maine-based three-year program of renewal encompassing her electrical, navigation, propulsion, rigging, sail handling, HVAC, plumbing, safety and domestic systems. The exceptional standard of her maintenance and presentation is evident throughout and confirmed by a recent survey.

For a buyer considering a contemporary custom build, MYSTERY offers a proven Fontaine design, Lyman-Morse pedigree and Maine craftsmanship on an extensively modernized platform — without the cost and lead time of commissioning a new custom yacht. MYSTERY is a very special yacht that truly shows like new.

DESIGN AND PEDIGREE

The brief: a yacht able to go anywhere with a high level of performance and comfort — shoal draft, ease of sail handling, exceptional machinery access, and tankage for extended passages.

Designer: Ted Fontaine, Fontaine Design Group (formerly chief designer of Ted Hood's Little Harbor Custom Yachts). A long track record of shoal draft designs ranging from 40' to 130’.

Builder: Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding, Thomaston, Maine — more than 35,000 hours of construction guided by 2,300 hours of design work. Hull laid up 2000; documented/model year 2001; completed and delivered 2002.

Three dedicated ownerships — as AMELIA, YOUNG AMERICA and now MYSTERY — and currently measured for racing under ORC, CRF and the NYYC Cruising Rule (all valid for 2026).

CONSTRUCTION

SCRIMP vacuum-infused FRP construction with Core-Cell structural foam and vinylester resin, incorporating an infused structural grid. The cast-lead shoal-draft keel carries 22,000 lbs of ballast in an externally cast bulb and houses the centerboard trunk. Keel bolts have been inspected and re-torqued under current ownership. The centerboard is solid fiberglass (approximately 500 lbs), hydrodynamically shaped, and retracts fully into the keel trunk on an electric captive-reel winch; it is normally raised under power and deployed under sail to enhance upwind performance. The spade rudder is SCRIMP-infused fiberglass on a carbon stock with self-aligning needle bearings. The deck is a foam-cored sandwich overlaid with glued and laid teak, replaced in 2019 by Teakdecking Systems at Hinckley, Portsmouth, RI. Topsides are Awlgrip 'Timeless Green’ with gold cove, double white boot stripes (all new 2022) and red bottom (2026).

MAIN ENGINE and MECHANICAL

A spacious dedicated machinery room provides standing access and generous working clearance around the main engine, generator, watermaker, freshwater pressure system and hydraulic equipment, with room for multiple technicians to work simultaneously. Access is through watertight doors from the galley passageway and the owner's shower.
